Environment

The environment we live in shapes how we feel more than we realise.

I think we often assume our mood, motivation and energy come entirely from us.

And while I fully believe we have a choice in how we show up each day, I've started noticing how much our environment influences us too.

The older I get, the more aware I become of it.

Take the weather.

If it's grey outside for a few days, everything seems to slow down a little. Not in a dramatic way — just enough that getting started feels harder than usual.

Then the sun comes out and suddenly I feel capable of sorting my entire life out. Clear the garage, start a new routine, become the sort of person who remembers to water their plants. It usually lasts until about 3pm.

The weather hasn't changed who I am.

It's just changed the environment I'm operating in.

I notice the same thing at home.

When the house is cluttered my brain feels cluttered too.

Nothing major, just the normal bits of life that haven't quite been put away yet.

But somehow a few things left on benches can make everything feel harder than it actually is.

It's amazing how much mental space physical clutter can take up.

And then there are people.

Some people leave you feeling lighter after you've spent time with them.

Others leave you feeling like you need a bit of quiet afterwards.

Not because anyone has done anything wrong.

Just because the people around us become part of our environment too.

I think that's the part we forget.

We spend so much time trying to change ourselves that we don't always notice what's influencing us in the first place.

Sometimes motivation isn’t missing.

It’s just being shaped by everything around you.

And the moment you start noticing that… you stop forcing yourself to push through everything.

And start choosing what actually supports how you want to feel.

And that changes everything.
