School Leavers

So… now what?

There’s this strange moment when school ends and suddenly you’re expected to “start your life.”

But no one actually explains what that means.

One minute everything is structured for you.

Timetables. Uniforms. Teachers telling you where to be.

And then suddenly… it’s not.

And you’re just standing there thinking:

“Okay… so what now?”

Some people seem to have it figured out straight away.

Uni. Apprenticeship. Job. Travel. Clear plan. Confident energy.

And then there’s the rest of us quietly thinking:

“Am I supposed to know what I’m doing right now?”

I remember that feeling of everything shifting all at once.

School finishes, and overnight the routine you’ve known for years just disappears.

No timetable.
No “you need to be here.”
No structure holding the days in place.

Just this open space that feels both exciting and slightly uncomfortable.

And while everyone talks about “starting your life,” what they don’t really mention is how unsteady that beginning can feel.

Because you’re expected to be certain… in a moment where you’re still figuring out who you are.

I wasn’t someone who had it all mapped out either.

I tried things. Changed direction. Overthought things. Changed my mind again.

At one point I genuinely thought I might be a hip hop dancer… which felt very serious at the time.

Safe to say that didn’t become the long-term plan (still kind of wish it did though).

But that’s kind of the point.

Most people don’t follow a straight line anyway.

Even though it can feel like you’re the only one who hasn’t figured it out yet.

You’re not.

You’re just at the beginning of trying things and learning what fits you.

And that stage can feel messy.

Because clarity doesn’t usually arrive first.

It shows up because you start moving.

So if you’re in that in-between space right now — where school is finished but life doesn’t feel fully started yet — you’re not behind.

You’re just at the beginning of figuring out what actually fits you.

And you don’t need to rush that part.

Because this is where things quietly start to take shape.

And where you start to realise — you’re more capable than you’ve been giving yourself credit for.

And that is actually where everything starts to open up.
